or LOG IN

Markings:

Property from the Collection of the Late Paula and Don Gaston

Condition:

The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc., an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's: This work has not been recently cleaned. It is heavily varnished, and the varnish has become noticeably dirty. Beneath this varnish, the canvas has a lining that seems to have been applied with wax, which in turn is backed with another dry canvas. The paint layer is stable. If the work is cleaned, the paint layer will noticeably brighten and considerably more depth will be revealed. However, cleaning will also remove any previous retouches and make their locations more apparent. Retouches can be seen here and there in small spots in the thin brown colors of the buildings beyond on both sides of the central tree, and are particularly concentrated around the lamppost on the upper right. Some losses can be seen around the extreme right and left edges in the snow. There is a loss which covers the corner but does not interrupt the signature or date in the lower left corner. Losses can be seen directly beneath the feet of the child standing in the lower right along the bottom edge and in the lower right corner. There is a fairly large area of restoration measuring about 3 inches square in snow in the lower center, which presumably addresses some larger paint loss. No noticeable retouches or areas of abrasion can be seen in the figures, which seem to be in good condition. Framed Dimensions: 26 3/4 by 22 3/4 in. (67.9 by 57.8 cm.)
